How to Choose Pendants and Necklaces Based On Your Face Shape
Choosing the right necklace can highlight your looks and compliment your face shape. Knowing how to style yourself will give you an edge in personal styling and boost your confidence.
Know Your Face Shape
The first step is to identify your face shape. You can do this in several ways.
- First, you pull your hair back with pins or a headband so all your hair is completely off the face.
- Then you can choose to measure or trace your face while looking at a mirror. Lay a piece of tracing paper over the mirror and outline the reflection of your face through it, or draw directly on the glass with a wet-erase (overhead projection) marker. The mirror can then be wiped clean with a wet paper towel. Alternatively, you can print a picture of your face and trace the shape.
- Lastly, compare the results to the reference images below and choose the one that matches the closest. The features may be softer or more angular but the general shape will be shown.
Types Of Face Shapes And What Makes You Look Awesome
These are not rules but guidelines that you can follow. These tips are useful while you are getting ready for the day or when you shop for new jewellery.
Oval Face Shape
Oval face shapes have rounded hairlines and jaws. The oval face is soft and curved, with an equal distance from the hairline to the eyebrow and from the eyebrow to the chin. They are slightly longer than they are wide.
Oval faces can wear almost any shape or style of necklaces as long as the design is in proportion to the individual. Wear a shorter necklace or a choker to emphasize your long neck. Rectangular pendants are good choices.
Diamond Face Shape
Diamond face shapes have narrow chins and forehead. Their cheekbones are the widest. Similar to oval faces but rarer, diamond faces can wear almost any shape or style of necklaces as long as the design is in proportion to the individual. Wear a shorter necklace or a choker to emphasize your long neck.
Round Face Shape
If you have a round jaw and hairline, nice round cheeks and a wide and long nose, you have a round face shape! It’s best to go for longer necklaces that create a V or Y. Geometric pendants will also be very complimentary as they give the impression of a longer face shape.
Oblong/Rectangular Face Shape
Oblong or rectangular faces look similar to oval faces, but the width of the face at the forehead, cheekbones and chin are almost the same. Oblong faces are longer and narrower, so chokers, shorter necklaces with a wide curve and circular pendants are preferred.
Square Face Shape
Square faces have strong jawlines. A square face shape has an equal distance from the forehead, cheekbones and jawline. To balance a strong jaw, add length with long necklaces and linear shapes.
Heart-shaped Face Shape
Heart-shaped faces have narrow chins and wider foreheads. Heart-shaped faces need short necklaces with wider bases to reduce the appearance of length in the jawline and diminish the sharp point of the chin.
Triangle Face Shape
The triangle-shaped face has a narrow hairline and wide jawline – the opposite of a heart-shaped face. Short necklaces with gentle curves will soften the strong jawline. Long necklaces with eye-catching, linear pendants are also great choices.
It’s good to play around with different styles of jewellery and see what you like the best. It’s not about rules, it’s about feeling and looking your best.
